     Harry Hayes, a resident of Port Chester, died December 31, 2010, he was 84 and was born on June 23, 1926 in Port Chester, NY. He was raised in both Port Chester and Purchase and graduated from Port Chester High School in 1944. After Graduation, 1944 to 1946, Harry served in the United States Navy stationed aboard the U.S.S. Bon Homme Richard (Essex Class Aircraft Carrier) in World War II. The Bon Homme Richard served in Pacific Theater until the end of the war. Harry came back to Port Chester after the war and attended evening classes at Iona College on the G.I. Bill. Harry was employed by the Homelite Corp. for 33 years retiring in 1984. He was an avid golfer. Harry has one sister Dorothy Rentfro and many nieces and nephews living in Texas. Also survived by his dear friends Marcy Acerbo and Grace Murphy and everyone from The Port Chester Volunteer Fire Department.

     In 1954, Harry joined Washington Engine & Hose Company No. 4, of the Port Chester Fire Department. He served as 2nd Lieutenant in 1971-72, 1st Lieutenant in 1973-74 and as Captain in 1975-76. He has served on many company committees and was President of the Company in 1978. In 1979-1980, Harry was elected to the position of Second Assistant Fire Chief, of the Village of Port Chester Fire Department. In 1981-82 he was elected as First Assistant Chief and in 1983-85, Harry was elected to the position of Chief Engineer of the Port Chester Fire Department. During his tenure as Chief, Harry was confronted with some very large fires such as Port Chester Plate & Glass. Harry remains very active in the Fire Department. As a Past Chief, he served as the Secretary of the Sound Shore Chiefs Association from 1984 to 1994 and was on the original Fire Department golf outing committee started in 1974. Harry is currently serving as a representative, on the Village of Port Chester & Rye Brook Fire Advisory Committee.

     Visitation will be 4-8PM today, Monday, January 3, 2011 at Craft Memorial Home, Inc. Mass of Christian Burial will be 9:30AM on Tuesday on January 4, 2011 at Corpus Christi Church 136 South Regent St. Port Chester, NY. Interment to follow at Saint Mary's Cemetery Rye Brook, NY.
